Description
The State Tobacco Activities Tracking and Evaluation System (STATE) is an electronic data warehouse containing up-to-date and historical state-level data on tobacco use prevention and control. The STATE system integrates many data sources to provide comprehensive summary data and to facilitate research and consistent data interpretation.
Selected Content
STATE includes data on cigarette and other tobacco use, resident population estimates, tobacco manufacturing and sales, health consequences and cost, and state tobacco-control legislation including legislation related to e-cigarettes.
Methodology
State-level data on tobacco use are extracted from a variety of surveys and other sources, including: The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), the Tobacco Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS), the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), and the Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS). The Economic Research Service provides tobacco manufacturing data, while the National Association of Attorneys General provides Tobacco Revenue Settlement data. Data on health consequences and costs come from the Smoking Attributable Mortality, Morbidity and Economic Costs (SAMMEC) application. Legislative data come from a variety of sources, including Westlaw (an online legal research service for legal professionals). The data in STATE are updated regularly. These updates include the addition of newly-available data for existing measures and the replacement of historical data to maintain consistency with original data sources.
