Opioid misuse and opioid use disorder are on the rise among older adults — but researchers don’t yet fully understand the factors that contribute to this trend among older adults. This report provides a framework for understanding how to reduce adverse outcomes of opioid use in older adults, and to describe the evidence available for different factors that contribute to opioid misuse and opioid use disorder among that age group. Researchers found that more studies are needed to look at interventions to reduce adverse outcomes and manage opioid use in older adults.
