In this Cochrane systematic review, the Cochrane Collaborative found that universal family‐based programs can be effective at preventing alcohol misuse in children and adolescents age 18 years and younger. These programs typically include development of parenting skills like parental support, nurturing behaviors, establishment of clear boundaries or rules, and parental monitoring. Researchers found that the effects of these programs are small but consistent and continue into the medium to longer term.
