ICYMI: HHS Hosts First-Ever “Food is Medicine” Summit in Washington, D.C.

In recognition of the critical connection between nutrition and the ability for individuals to thrive in their communities, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services held the first-ever Food is Medicine Summit on January 31. The event demonstrates federal momentum and commitment to advance the Food is Medicine priority included in the Biden-Harris Administration’s National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition & Health.

At the Office of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (ODPHP), we know that far too many Americans are living with preventable chronic diseases, resulting in shorter life expectancies and increased medical costs. This is why ODPHP is proud to lead HHS’ Food is Medicine initiative. As part of this effort, ODPHP will continue the conversation started at the Summit by working with our partners to develop foundational resources to advance the Food is Medicine landscape.

Last week’s Food is Medicine Summit served as a reminder that food plays a critical role in preserving our nation’s health, resilience, and well-being. The event highlighted the critical role of cross-sector partners in innovation, collaboration, and shared stewardship to integrate community-centered Food is Medicine approaches. Not only did HHS announce three new partnerships that will take the concept to new heights, but the Summit brought together experts in the field from the public and private sectors—federal leaders, members of Congress, industry innovators, community champions and so many others—for a day filled with powerful panel discussions and remarks on how HHS and its partners can jointly support and advance Food is Medicine more broadly.
